Thursday’s Thoughts From a Bartender: Valentine’s Day Do’s and Don’ts

Valentines Day. It’s a subject that’s been brought up a lot at the bar over this past week, with many a patron sharing their thoughts and plans about what they’re planning to do for their date this coming Monday. And as a bartender dedicated to providing you valuable information about the male and female psyche, online dating etiquette, how to tip adequately, when to know your limit, and other similar, essential dating topics, I feel a paramount duty to relate to you, dear reader, some of the dos and don’ts of Valentine’s Day.

Now, the dos of Valentine’s Day are pretty straightforward. For example, DO go out of your way to be extra thoughtful towards your date. DO put some time into planning your date (i.e. make dinner reservations in advance, don’t wait till last minute to buy a Valentine’s day gift, follow appropriate online dating etiquette, etc.). And if you don’t believe me, here’s what one attractive female customer said about Valentine’s Day: “At least for me, the little things a guy does on Valentine’s Day really do make a big impression on me. Even if it is as cliché as chocolates and flowers, it’s the thought that counts.”

And on to the don’ts. Well actually, the one don’t that I have in mind is so significant that it overshadows all the other don’ts. DON’T decide to take your date to a dive bar on Valentine’s Day. Over this past week, you’d be surprised over how many female customers that I’ve had come in and vent to me about how much they hate being taken to dives on Valentine’s Day.

“It’s pretty miserable,” says one jaded female customer, “you meet him, you start to like him, you send flirty texts back and forth, he has awesome online dating etiquette, he asks you out on Valentine’s Day, you get all giddy and spend so long planning the right outfit, he picks you up… and then takes you to some dumpy dive bar he likes because of the great happy hour. I mean, come on! It’s just one day out of the year! How hard can it be to make a woman feel special?”

So there you have it. Just make your date feel special, for crying out loud. Now, I’m not saying that you have to dress up in a red suit, shower yourself in rose petals, or exclusively refer to your date as “my special Valentine’s love muffin.” But I am saying that you should go out of your way to make her feel special. Simple as that.

About Jennifer Kelton

Jennifer KeltonI did not wake up one morning and say “hey I think I’d like a man use my sweater like a towel, write a candid dating book, become a dating expert, the CEO and founder of a social dating site and have three blogs.”

All of this has happened in a slow burn and here I am. The good, the bad, the mistakes, way too many tears shed to count, lots of wine and oh my goodness a huge learning curve that leaves me much of the time saying, “I’m sorry but this is all new to me.”
