Friday’s Fashion Dating Do or Don’t? — Wide Leg Trousers

It is so surprising how fashion trends seem to literally change overnight. It seemed like last week everyone and their mother was trying to diet so they wouldn’t look like they were stuffed into their skinny jeans. Skinny jeans showed every curve you had, even if you didn’t want them to. However, now the tides have changed and it seems that wide legged trousers have taken over overnight. Wide legged trousers are the new skinny jean. They are comfortable and fun, and they can really compliment a woman’s body if worn correctly. In fact they can compliment a mans body too.

Men should probably veer away from wide legged trousers while on a date, however if they have just left yoga or some other favorite Hollywood stress reliever, wide legged trousers (you know, the white cotton type) can actually look pretty good on a man.

High-waisted wide legged trousers might even be the cause of why the hourglass figure became so popular- think old Hollywood glam, and then lets thank them for allowing us women to show some curves! Wide legged trousers, if worn correctly, look pretty good on most body types. However if they are worn incorrectly, it can be one big, hot mess of too much material. Wide legged trousers have the word “wide” in the name for a reason: they can make you look wide. They have a lot of material on the bottom of the pant and they need to be worn with a tighter top, preferably a top with less material. Now I am not saying show some belly button, but I am thinking more of a slim t-shirt tucked into the pants, or a nice blouse if you want to dress it up.

Too much material on both ends of the body can make you look like you are swimming in your clothes, and not too many people like to swim while they are on a date. This is the same case with a flowy skirt; it cannot be paired with a flowy top or else you will be drowning in material. Another problem that can occur with wide legged trousers is that women who carry their weigh in their mid-section (also known as the apple shape), like most of the women in my family including myself, can not wear the high-waisted version of the pant. This type of pant is really flattering on every fruit shape out there, except for the apple. However, apple shaped women can wear the low-rise wide legged trouser just fine and look damn good doing it. When wearing wide legged trousers, a heel is your best bet as far as shoes go. Not only will heels look better with the pant, but they will also prevent the pant from dragging on the ground, a definite no-no in the fashion world. If you are a big spender, letting $200 jeans drag on the ground is just wrong.

The best type of heel you can wear with a wide legged trouser would be a wedge type shoe. Wedges will not only be more comfortable and stable for walking, but they will also compliment the pants and help transport you back to the 70s, a time when both of these styles were a huge hit. Heels will also make your butt perk up which will draw attention to all the right areas (which is not great for your posture, but we all make sacrifices). Wide legged trousers were hibernating in the fashion world (or maybe skinny jeans tried to suffocate them too) but they are now back with a vengeance and are a definite must on a date.

About Jennifer Kelton

Jennifer KeltonI did not wake up one morning and say “hey I think I’d like a man use my sweater like a towel, write a candid dating book, become a dating expert, the CEO and founder of a social dating site and have three blogs.”

All of this has happened in a slow burn and here I am. The good, the bad, the mistakes, way too many tears shed to count, lots of wine and oh my goodness a huge learning curve that leaves me much of the time saying, “I’m sorry but this is all new to me.”
